The competition project foresaw a major refurbishment of a two story Auchan Hypermarket serving the Venice area. A complex roof dominates the extension, allowing natural lighting to flow into the mall and control direct sunlight onto the storefronts. The mall extension followed two fundamental design criteria. Firstly, shop windows are visible from both floor levels to instill a constant and direct relationship with shoppers. Secondly, new iconic entrances with greater transparency increase the visual dimension with the outside world and provide, for the public, adequate shelter and stationing areas.
